 Background:

The MHPSS/GBV Officer contributes to the calling of Medical Teams International by providing technical support in the implementation of MHPSS/GBV project activities that include building the capacity of the health team, psychologists, community health/psychosocial workers, case workers, and direct services for individuals with mental health and GBV problems providing basic counselling and other interventions. The position holder will work with the conflict and emergency affected communities, through psychologists and case workers, to directly identify individuals who are vulnerable, victims, survivors or patients in need of MHPSS/GBV care and support community-based PSS initiatives like among others

 



 
 Duties and responsibilities:

Program Development and Implementation:

 

  • Provide technical leadership and oversight of the MHPSS/GBV programing and integration in all Medical Teams activities.
  • Implement MHPSS and GBV activities according to project workplans.
  • Support the provision of individual psychosocial support (PSS) and basic counseling services.
  • Support safe spaces and community-based protection activities.
  • Conduct awareness sessions on GBV prevention, mental health, and available services.
  • Facilitate support groups for vulnerable individuals (women, girls, survivors)

  • Support GBV program as he/she provides survivor-centered case management services, conducts safe and confidential intake, assessment, and action planning, ensures informed consent and confidentiality at all times, develops safety plans with survivors, refers survivors to health, legal, shelter, and other services as needed, and maintains accurate and confidential case files.
  • Ensure the timely rollout of MHPSS/GBV activities, overseeing project planning, implementation, monitoring, and troubleshooting in the area of responsibility with the support of health Manager.
  • Lead the design and implementation of MHPSS/GBV assessments, analyse problems/gaps, and propose/prioritize timely programmatic responses to mental health and psychosocial issues identified.
  • Lead the development of MHPSS/GBV SOPs and data collection tools in within the scope of the project.
  • Plan and support the recruitment, training, and supervision of MHPSS/GBV staff & other health workers.
  • Support the development of strategies that strengthen the MHPSS/GBV interventions
  • In coordination with MEAL Officer, HIS Officers, Health Officer, Nutrition Officer etc, develop and maintain mechanisms for the timely generation of statistical data on MHPSS/GBV services, trends, and activities.
  • Represent Medical Teams at MHPSS/GBV working group meetings and other relevant forums, developing partnerships with governmental and non-governmental stakeholders eg UNHCR, UNICEF etc to ensure strong coordination
  • Assist the Health & Nutrition Manager to prepare project proposals, narrative and progress, reports, and other relevant documentation, to ensure the MHPSS components are well captured. 
  • Ensure gender and protection mainstreaming within all project activities.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to MHPSS staff, partners, and community-based workers. 
  • Develop and deliver training programs for MHPSS staff, other sector staff, and community members on MHPSS topics. 
  • Provide ongoing supervision, mentoring, and coaching to MHPSS/GBV team members. 
  • Foster a supportive and professional working environment for the MHPSS team. 
  • Promote adherence to ethical guidelines and professional standards in MHPSS/GBV service delivery.

 

Coordination and Collaboration:

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with relevant stakeholders, including government authorities, UN agencies, international and national NGOs, and community leaders.
  • Represent the organization in relevant MHPSS coordination forums and working groups.
  • Collaborate with other sector teams within the organization to ensure integrated programming.
  • Support the development and strengthening of referral pathways for individuals with mental health needs

 

Monitoring, Evaluation, and Reporting:

  • Develop and implement M&E frameworks and tools for MHPSS activities.
  • Collect, analyze, and interpret MHPSS data to inform program design and implementation.
  • Prepare timely and accurate reports on MHPSS activities, progress, and challenges.
  • Contribute to the overall project reporting and donor requirements.
  • Participate in program evaluations and contribute to learning and adaptation.

 

Advocacy and Awareness Raising:

  • Contribute to the development and implementation of advocacy strategies to promote mental health and psychosocial well-being.
  • Participate in awareness-raising activities to reduce stigma associated with mental health issues and gender based violence.
  • Advocate for the inclusion of MHPSS/GBV in broader humanitarian and development efforts.

Safeguarding

  • Support safeguarding of program participants and employees through promoting an environment of awareness and upholding the code of conduct provisions of Medical Teams Protection from Sexual Exploitation & Abuse, Child & Vulnerable Adult protection, and harassment-free workplace policies. Incumbents will remain alert and responsive to any child and adult safeguarding risks, acquire relevant knowledge and skills which will enable you to promote strong safeguarding practices, understand the child and adult safeguarding policy and procedures, and conduct yourself in a manner consistent with the Safeguarding code of conduct and behavior expectations. 
  • Utilize volunteers when appropriate. 
  • Additional duties as assigned. 

                  


 
 Minimum Qualification, Skills and Experience Required:

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in psychology, Social Protection, Mental Health, Psychiatry, or related field.

Preferred:

  • Master’s degree in Mental Health or MPH, Psychiatry 

Experiences:

 

Required:

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in mental health, family, and child counseling; and experience in gender-based violence and psychological trauma is an asset.
  • Experience working in humanitarian or conflict settings is an asset.
  • Strong understanding of GBV guiding principles and survivor-centered approach.

Preferred:

  • MhGAp experience is an asset.
  • Experience with vulnerable groups, preferably refugee and migrant populations will be an asset.
  • Experience in mental health and GBV programming in a humanitarian or development program context
