The Program / Department / Team 

The project has been designed to respond to the worsening humanitarian situation in River Nile State, where conflict-related displacement has placed heavy pressure on limited services. Thousands of displaced people have settled in Ed Damer and nearby areas. Over ten months, the intervention will directly reach 67,988 individuals, including 7,716 women, 4,911 men, and 55,361 children, through a mix of fixed facilities and mobile clinics to serve both settled and displaced populations with limited or no functioning infrastructure.

Health activities will restore access to primary care through outpatient consultations, treatment of communicable and non-communicable diseases, and provision of sexual and reproductive health services such as antenatal, postnatal, family planning, and safe delivery support where feasible. The project will also strengthen disease surveillance and response, improve outbreak reporting and management, and ensure the supply of essential medicines, medical commodities, and IPC materials. To enhance sustainability, targeted training will be provided for health workers and volunteers in case management, IPC, and referral pathways. As, overwhelming already weak health and nutrition systems.

 

The Position (General Position Summary)

The Nutrition Officer supports day to day delivery of the nutrition package at PHC corners and on mobile rounds. The role verifies admissions and follow up, coaches community assistants, reconciles registers and stock cards, and helps close referrals every week. The officer works closely with CAFA health staff and SMoH focal points so health and nutrition actions are aligned and clients are not lost between services. 

 



 
 Duties and responsibilities:

Essential Responsibilities

 

PROGRAM DELIVERY AND TECHNICAL QUALITY

  • Deliver community screening and case management to standard including admissions appetite tests counselling and follow up with safe referral of complicated cases.
  • Keep one weekly plan with the CAFA team and PHC leads covering routes staff lists and service days for fixed and mobile points.
  • Run simple readiness checks before service days and fix gaps the same day registers forms stock cards job aids privacy and IPC items.
  • Observe sessions provide short coaching and agree quick fixes with assistants and facility staff then confirm closure on the next visit.
  • Maintain one referral pathway and log with CAFA and SMoH and trace defaulters and pending feedback each week

 

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT AND CLIENT CARE

  • Inform community leaders and CHVs of service days and locations and support mobilisation and queue management
  • Give clear respectful counselling with attention to privacy and cultural norms and provide mother cards or handouts as planned
  • Receive client feedback and complaints through the agreed channels and help close the loop with simple actions families can see

 

MEAL AND REPORTING

  • Keep tidy and complete registers and tally sheets at PHCs and outreach points and reconcile with CHV tallies and referral logs
  • Submit weekly figures for EWARS as requested and provide accurate monthly summaries for donor and cluster reporting
  • Use coded IDs and store documents safely and correct errors quickly when checks find inconsistencies
  • Join short weekly reviews with the coordinator CAFA and MEAL and adjust the next round based on coverage and referral results

 

SUPPLY CHAIN, FINANCE AND COMPLIANCE

  • Forecast three weeks ahead for site consumables and small items submit requests on time and track receipts and issues with simple files
  • Keep stock cards current at PHC corners and in mobile caches and return unused items after rounds
  • Set up safe workable spaces each service day with privacy water waste segregation and hand hygiene supplies
  • Care for small devices and tools including scales stadiometers and cool boxes and replace small items like batteries as planned

 

TEAM MANAGEMENT 

  • Provide day to day tasking and coaching for Community Nutrition Assistants and community volunteers during service days
  • Set weekly objectives and simple duty rosters that match the site schedule and mobile routes so each station is covered
  • Run short on the job practice sessions covering admissions appetite testing counselling register use referral steps infection prevention and privacy
  • Check attendance timesheets and training records and submit accurate summaries to the coordinator on time
  • Reinforce a respectful and safe workspace safeguard clients and staff and escalate concerns immediately when issues arise
  • Give clear feedback after each round agree one or two fixes with the team and confirm closure on the next visit

 

COORDINATION, AND REPRESENTATION

  • Work with CAFA PHC in charges and SMoH focal persons to keep one joined plan and avoid overlaps or gaps
  • Align with UNICEF and WFP supply focal points on requests deliveries and reporting calendars and confirm receipt at sites
  • Share short field updates and incident notes with the coordinator on time and follow movement and safety steps every day

 

SAFEGUARDING RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Actively learns about safeguarding and integrates it into their work, including safeguarding risks and mitigations related to their area of work.
  • Practices the values of Mercy Corps including respecting the dignity and well-being of participants and fellow team members.
  • Encourages openness and communication in their team; encourages team members to submit reports if they have any concerns using reporting mechanisms e.g., Integrity Hotline and other options.

 

Supervisory Responsibility

Direct: Community Nutrition Assistants

Day to day tasking and coaching of Community Nutrition Assistants and supportive direction to MoH seconded staff and CHVs during service days

 

 

Accountability

Reports Directly To: Health and Nutrition Coordinator

Works Directly With: CAFA Health Team; SMoH focal persons; MC MEAL, Operations, Finance, HR, Safety/Security; UNICEF/WFP focal points.

 

Accountability to Participants and Stakeholders

Mercy Corps team members are expected to support all efforts toward accountability, specifically to our program participants, community partners, other stakeholders, and to international standards guiding international relief and development work. We are committed to actively engaging communities as equal partners in the design, monitoring and evaluation of our field projects.


 
 Minimum Qualification, Skills and Experience Required:

Minimum Qualification & Transferable Skills 

  • Bachelor or diploma in nutrition nursing public health or a related field
  • At least 3 years of experience delivering or supervising community nutrition or PHC based nutrition services in Sudan or similar settings
  • Practical skills in CMAM and MIYCN at community and PHC level including counselling and safe referral of complicated cases
  • Able to keep clean registers tally sheets referral logs and stock cards and comfortable with basic DHIS2 and EWARS tasks
  • Clear coordination and communication with facility staff community leaders volunteers and partner teams
  • Arabic required and basic English for reporting preferred
  • Confident user of simple digital tools and Microsoft Word and Excel

Living Conditions / Environmental Conditions

The position is based in Atbara and it requires up to 40% travel to support country programs, which may include travel to insecure locations where freedom of movement is limited and areas where amenities are limited. Housing for this role is in individual housing and staff will have access to good medical services and the living situation is of a high standard.
