 Background:

Medair Sudan consists of a health, nutrition and psychosocial support related projects. The health, nutrition and psychosocial team operates in selected sites in Khartoum state based on assessed needs covering (water, sanitation, and hygiene), Health, Nutrition and Mental health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS).  The health, nutrition, psychosocial support and water, hygiene and sanitation teams have the capacity to respond with health, nutrition, psychosocial support, water, hygiene and sanitation services as well as NFIs. Logistics support is needed to facilitate program implementation, especially with regards to procurement.

 

The Project will provide Health, Nutrition and MHPSS interventions in order to reduce morbidity and mortality to the communities affected by the crisis. MHPSS interventions in Khartoum.

 

The purpose of the PSS Officer is to assist and supervise the direct implementation of the PSS programming and ensure the effective linkage at the community level by the support of the PSS Volunteers. The aim being to raise awareness, build capacity and strengthen efforts through existing community-based structures, individual support to reduce stigma so that vulnerable individuals feel encouraged to seek support for MHPSS related issues along with sectoral linkages to address basic needs aimed at improving well-being.



 
 Duties and responsibilities:

Technical

  • Train the PSS Volunteers on identification and referral of individuals with psychosocial (PSS) needs and other suspected mental health problems who require specialist/medical care interventions in line with the established referral pathway.
  • Conduct awareness raising activities in the health facilities at the waiting areas by integrating PSS messages in health and nutrition 
  • Perform key community members interviews in order to tailor culturally appropriated messages on MHPSS and GBV that will be delivered by PSS volunteers in the HFs and communities. 
  • Train frontline workers on integrated MHPSS messaging 
  • Provide health facility staff continuous structured training on PFA,supportive communication, stressmanagement, GBV pocket guide, and safe identification and referrals.
  • Monitor activities and deliver clinical supervision (individual, in group and on the job) remotely or in-person (if security allows) in order to ensure quality of services delivered, and to prevent burnout, secondary and vicarious trauma. The officer will identify and ensure that staff in need will be referred to psychosocial support
  • Spearhead and participate in monthly meetings of MHPSS team in your location to discuss problems, challenges and progress.

 

Staff Management

  • Directly support and oversee the assigned recruitment, day-to-day management, development and training, and appraisals for the CHWs implementing PSS activities under your supervision.
  • Facilitate regular team meetings with the assigned team members, reviewing team and individual objectives and providing opportunity for feedback.

 

Communication and Coordination

  • Maintain appropriate, regular, transparent and supportive communication structures with the assigned Medair team especially the MHPSS Project Manager, advisors and other relevant stakeholders (e.g. beneficiaries, community leaders, local and national government officials, UN agencies and other NGOs)
  • Represent Medair at relevant local level coordination meetings involving local authorities, UN agencies and other NGOs
  • Facilitate appropriate community involvement in the design and delivery of PSS services and ensuring adequate feedback mechanisms are in place, along with the Project Manager and other sectors.

 

Quality Management

  • Conduct monthly supervision to PSS Volunteers and Assistants and feedback results to the project implementation team and the Project manager. 
  • Implement relevant policies and standards relating to service delivery including Sphere standards, Ministry of Health and donor guidelines and other good practice.
  • Participate as requested in Medair internal workshops and distance learning sessions to keep up with changing trends, new guidelines and best practices.

 

Monitoring and Evaluation

  • Provide continuous mentoring in accurate collection and timely reporting of data generated from the community PSS Volunteers (CHWs). 

 

General

Any other duties as requested by line manager, relevant to the scope of work.


 
 Minimum Qualification, Skills and Experience Required:

QUALIFICATION / EXPERIENCE:

ESSENTIAL

DESIRABLE

Vocational qualification

Diploma in psychology, psychiatry, social worker, nurse with MHPSS specialization.

Degree in the above field is an added advantage

  • Trained counsellor

 

Work experience

  • At least 2 years prior work experience in PSS work or similar roles
  • Experience leading participatory trainings and methodologies 
  • Experience working with similar organisation

Communication 

  • Fluency in English (spoken & written)  
  • Fluency in local languages (spoken & written)

 

Other skills

  • Working skills with Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) and use of email, CBPS training
