Alight came to Sudan in 2004 as one of the first humanitarian responders to the emergency needs of some 500,000 war-affected IDPs and host populations in the Tulus and Gereida corridors in South Darfur. In 2014, Alight expanded services its reach to include East Darfur. Today, Alight serves displaced populations and host communities in Kassala, Gedaref, West Kordofan, and East and South Darfur states. Alight provides lifesaving humanitarian action, recovery, and development services in these five states, with a country office based in Khartoum.

Field offices in Kassala, Gedaref, Nyala, El Daein,serve as the key state hubs for program delivery. Alight’s staff is more than 99 percent Sudanese, with nearly 800 full-time staff joined by over 400 incentive and community health and protection workers in delivering lifesaving programs and durable solutions in Sudan.

Alight is registered in Sudan and works closely with Federal and State Line Ministries to carry out its humanitarian and development mandates.

 Background:

The GBV Protection Officer will oversee and manage GBV protection activities at the field level, providing leadership to a multidisciplinary team including psychologists, GBV caseworkers, and GBV assistants. This role ensures the effective provision of services to survivors, including case management, psychosocial support, and awareness-raising initiatives. The GBV Protection Officer will ensure high standards of service delivery and will report regularly to the Protection Manager on the progress and challenges of GBV activities in the field.



 
 Duties and responsibilities:

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Oversee the work of psychologists, GBV caseworkers, and GBV assistants to ensure quality delivery of services.
  • Provide regular coaching, guidance, and mentoring to team members to ensure they are equipped to handle cases of GBV in a survivor-centered manner.
  • Assess staff performance regularly and provide feedback on how to improve services and team dynamics

2. GBV Case Management and Psychosocial Support

  • Ensure GBV caseworkers and psychologists are providing timely, survivor-centered case management and psychosocial support in line with international standards.
  • Guarantee that survivors receive appropriate legal, psychosocial, and protection support through effective case management.
  • Ensure the protection of survivors' confidentiality and data, in compliance with ethical guidelines.

3. Community Awareness and Engagement

  • Supervise GBV assistants to design and implement community outreach and awareness-raising campaigns to prevent GBV and raise awareness of available services.
  • Work with local community leaders and stakeholders to increase awareness and build community-driven protection mechanisms.

4. Program Implementation and Oversight

  • Ensure that GBV protection activities are carried out according to established guidelines, best practices, and the organization’s strategic objectives.
  • Regularly assess the quality and impact of GBV activities, making recommendations for adjustments where needed.

5. Reporting and Documentation

  • Provide regular updates to the Protection Manager on the status of GBV activities, including progress, challenges, and the impact of programs.
  •  Ensure that all case files and program data are properly documented and that reports are submitted on time in accordance with the organization's policies.
  • Collect and analyze data on GBV cases and program activities, producing reports that highlight trends, successes, and areas for improvement.

6. Capacity Building and Training

  • Provide ongoing training to the team to enhance their knowledge and skills in GBV case management, psychosocial support, and ethical standards.
  • Develop and deliver training to staff to address emerging issues and refine response strategies.

7. Coordination and Stakeholder Engagement

  • Liaise with local authorities, NGOs, and other service providers to coordinate comprehensive GBV prevention and response efforts.
  • Ensure there are effective referral pathways and a coordinated response between various service providers, ensuring that survivors receive timely support.
  • Regularly assess the GBV risks and protection needs in the community, recommending adaptations to programs as needed. Adapt the GBV programs to meet the evolving needs of survivors and the community.

8. Key Reporting Responsibilities: 

  • Provide weekly or monthly written reports on the status of field activities and staff performance.
  • Share detailed updates on case trends, program challenges, and resource needs.
  • Ensure the timely submission of reports, ensuring they meet internal and donor requirements.
  • Contribute to the documentation of best practices and lessons learned in GBV programming.
  • Provide insights for program improvement and future planning based on field experiences and team feedback.

 
 Minimum Qualification, Skills and Experience Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in Social Work, Psychology, Sociology, Human Rights, or related fields.
  •  At least 3 years of experience in GBV protection, with experience managing multidisciplinary teams (psychologists, caseworkers, assistants).
  • Knowledge and Skills:
  • Strong knowledge of GBV prevention and response strategies.
  • Experience in case management and psychosocial support.
  • Ability to manage, supervise, and mentor a team effectively.
  • Strong communication skills for reporting and engaging with stakeholders.
  • Languages: 
  • Fluency in English; knowledge of local languages is highly desirable
