 Background:

CHILD SAFEGUARDING: 

Level 3:  the post holder will have contact with children and/or young people either frequently (e.g. once a week or more) or intensively (e.g. four days in one month or more or overnight) because they work country programs; or are visiting country programs; or because they are responsible for implementing the police checking/vetting process staff.

ROLE PURPOSE:

The Health & Nutrition Coordinator, under the supervision of the Head of Program Implementation, leads the planning, execution, monitoring, and reporting of health and nutrition program. The role ensures alignment with national policies and donor standards, provides technical support to partners and field teams, builds capacity, and strengthens collaboration with local health authorities to enhance service delivery and community impact.

In the event of a major humanitarian emergency, the role holder will be expected to adapt quickly, take on additional responsibilities beyond the normal role profile, and work flexible hours to support the emergency response.

SCOPE OF ROLE: 

The Health and Nutrition Coordinator leads the effective implementation of health and nutrition interventions, manages local partners, ensures program quality and compliance, and represents the organization in coordination forums. The role also involves technical support, capacity building, and strategic collaboration with stakeholders and government health authorities.

Staff reporting to this post: 2 (Health & Nutrition Officer, Health and Nutrition Community Mobilizer)

Budget Responsibilities: Yes, 1 million Euro

 

Role Dimensions: Save the Children International in Sudan is working across Sudan e.g. Khartoum, South, West and North Kordofan, North, West & Central Darfur States, and the Red Sea State in Sudan. Our thematic coverage includes child rights governance, child protection, education, health, nutrition, WASH, livelihoods, and humanitarian emergencies. We maintain diversified sources of funding including SIDA, OFDA, DFATD, GSK, EC/ECHO etc.

This is a challenging role in a complex environment. It requires a dedicated, experienced and highly motivated individual who can manage the difficulties of living and working in such an environment and still be fundamental in helping to drive forward our programmes and our ambitions. 



 
 Duties and responsibilities:

  • Lead the planning, coordination, and implementation of health and nutrition activities in line with project objectives, national guidelines, and Save the Children’s Quality Benchmarks.
  • Oversee the day-to-day execution of program activities, ensuring timely delivery, quality standards, and alignment with donor requirements.
  • Ensure the effective operation of the targeted health facilities, including staffing, logistics, and service quality.
  • Coordinate the delivery of maternal, newborn, and child health services, including immunization, antenatal/postnatal care, and growth monitoring.
  • Supervise the implementation of community-based nutrition interventions such as Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF), micronutrient supplementation, and screening for acute malnutrition.
  • Ensuring the integration of health promotion and behavior change communication strategies across all program components.
  • Support the development and dissemination of culturally appropriate health education materials and ensure their visibility in communities and health facilities.
  • Facilitate the organization of health campaigns, outreach sessions, and community dialogues in collaboration with local health authorities and partners.
  • Ensure that gender, disability inclusion, and child safeguarding principles are mainstreamed in all health and nutrition activities.
  • Conduct regular field visits to monitor program implementation, assess service quality, and provide technical support to field teams and partners.
  • Identify implementation challenges and propose timely, practical solutions to improve program performance and impact.

Partner Management and Capacity Building

  • Manage relationships with local implementing partners, including, onboarding, capacity building and performance monitoring.
  • Provide technical guidance and capacity building to partner staff to strengthen their ability to deliver quality health and nutrition services.
  • Ensure partners adhere to program standards, reporting requirements, and compliance with donor and SCI policies.
  • Support partners in adapting strategies and activities in response to contextual changes or operational challenges.

Financial Management

  • Support the development of program budgets and ensure alignment with planned activities and donor requirements.
  • Monitor expenditures against budget lines, ensuring cost-effectiveness and compliance with financial policies and procedures.
  • Work closely with the finance team to track partner spending, review financial reports, and ensure timely liquidation of advances.
  • Provide financial oversight to ensure that both SCI and partner expenditures are properly documented, reported, and aligned with grant agreements.

Monitoring, Evaluation, and Reporting

  • Collaborate with the MEAL team to ensure effective monitoring systems are in place, including data collection, indicator tracking, and feedback mechanisms.
  • Review and validate partner and field team reports, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and alignment with project indicators.
  • Contribute to the development of case studies, success stories, and lessons learned to inform program improvement and donor reporting.
  • Lead the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and final technical reports for internal and external stakeholders.

Human Resources Management

  • Supervise and provide day-to-day guidance to the Health and Nutrition Officer and Community Mobiliser, ensuring clarity of roles and responsibilities.
  • Support staff performance management through regular coaching, feedback, and performance evaluations.
  • Identify capacity-building needs and facilitate relevant training and development opportunities for team members.
  • Promote a positive team environment that encourages learning, accountability, and collaboration.
  • Ensure compliance with Save the Children’s HR policies, including safeguarding, code of conduct, and workplace safety.

Coordination and Representation

  • Represent the health and nutrition program in coordination meetings with government authorities, UN agencies, NGOs, and community stakeholders.
  • Maintain strong collaboration with internal departments (e.g., supply chain, finance, MEAL) to ensure smooth program operations.
  • Promote integration and synergy between health and nutrition interventions and other sectoral programs (e.g., child protection, WASH, education).

Emergency Preparedness and Response

  • Support rapid assessments and emergency health and nutrition responses in crisis-affected areas.
  • Ensure emergency preparedness plans are in place and that staff and partners are trained to respond effectively.

 

Child Safeguarding and Accountability

  • Ensure child safeguarding principles are integrated into all the health and nutrition activities and that staff and partners are trained and compliant.
  • Promote accountability to affected populations by supporting the establishment of accessible and safe feedback and complaint mechanisms.

 Minimum Qualification, Skills and Experience Required:

QUALIFICATIONS 

 BSC degree in Public Health, medicine and/or any other health disciplines such as medical assistant, nursing etc. 

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in public health, Nutrition, Nursing, or a related field is required.

Essential

  • Minimum of 3 years of progressive experience in managing health and nutrition programs, preferably with an international NGO or UN agency.
  • Proven experience in coordinating multi-sectoral health and nutrition interventions at the community and facility levels.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing and supporting local implementing partners, including capacity building and performance monitoring.
  • Experience in budget management, work planning, and donor reporting.
  • Experience working in emergency and humanitarian contexts is an asset.
  • strong technical knowledge of public health and nutrition programming, including maternal and child health, IYCF, and community-based management of acute malnutrition (CMAM)

Desirable

  • Excellent leadership, coordination, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook); knowledge of data analysis tools is an advantage.
