 Background:

The Near East Foundation (NEF) is seeking candidates for a Wash Assistant, to be based in its Abujibeeha office. The Assistant will be coordinating all interventions for beneficiaries and partners related to WASH interventions in 6 localities (Abu-Kersholla, Alabassya, Rashad, Abujubaiha, Talodi and Ghadeer) within South Kordofan State The position is expected to work under supervision of the WASH specialist.

Working through a network of country offices and local partners, NEF has operations in ten countries: Armenia, Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq, Mali, Morocco, Palestine, Sudan, South Sudan, and Syria. Our programs are organized around three themes: Inclusive Economic Development, Climate-resilient Development, and Stabilization and Peacebuilding.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

WASH Assistant is responsible for assisting in implementing, monitoring and evaluation, and quality assurance of WASH activities to ensure overall efficiency and effectiveness of the program goals and objectives. The WASH Assistant will provide technical support in the implementation and monitoring of appropriate WASH interventions in close cooperation with technical staff. The WASH Assistant is expected to assist in the preparation and implementation of a variety of technical and administrative tasks, related to the development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the WASH output and outcome of the program.



 
 Duties and responsibilities:

Under the supervision of the Water & Sanitation Specialist, the WASH Assistant has the following specific responsibilities:

Field work and monitoring of activities:

  • Document key issues and produce relevant reports to the direct supervisor;
  • Check the implementation against agreed technical specifications, timeline, and strategy and compliance with BHA standards;
  • Assist with weekly data collection for timely reporting, documentation and sharing of lessons learned;
  • Review weekly staff work plans and movements based on the planned activities to be implemented, and plan coordinating activities, as directed;

Engagement:

  • Maintain close coordination with beneficiaries and ensure all WASH related issues are raised and addressed promptly; Ensure feedback is provided to beneficiaries and NEF on action taken;
  • Build positive working relationship and image with sector related personnel in government, local communities and WASH agencies by upholding NEF values;
  • Ensure activities supported through partners are based on project plans, management approval, and formal agreements;
  • Assist with overseeing the rehabilitation and upgrading of water points by the companies contracted by the project, and timely share progress information;
  • Contribute and facilitate all community capacity building trainings and awareness in coordination with WES;
  • Assist with the arrangement and coordinate with WES and communities to establish proper water points management plans;
  • Any other additional duties assigned by the Water & Sanitation Specialist or project coordinator;
  • Represent NEF in field coordination meetings whenever needed, and provide minutes and records of issues need immediate actions;

 
 Minimum Qualification, Skills and Experience Required:

QUALIFICATIONS 

The successful WASH Assistant must be a self-directed individual with the following qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or environmental science or a closely related subject;
  • At least 1 year of relevant experience with the environment and OFDA standards;
  • At least 1 year of experience working on livelihoods projects;
  • High-level knowledge and practice with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc., required;
  • Fluency in Arabic both written and verbal, required.  Basic fluency in written and verbal English, preferred.

  • Must be able to: work in a fast-paced environment; perform duties under pressure and meet deadlines in a timely manner; work as part of a team; complete assignments independently; take instructions and criticism constructively; exercise problem-solving skills; and interact with co-workers, partners, donors and the public in a professional and pleasant manner.
