 Background:

The Near East Foundation (NEF) is seeking candidates for Agriculture Livelihoods Specialist, to be based in its Abujibeeha office. The Specialist will be coordinating all interventions for beneficiaries and partners related to Livelihoods interventions including, but not limited to agricultural support and women empowerment for vulnerable households in South Kordofan State. 

NEF is a non-profit international development organization that has supported livelihoods recovery and community-based economic development in the Middle East, Africa, and Caucasus since 1915. NEF draws on local teams, experience, and partnerships in these regions to create community-led solutions to improve livelihoods and local governance among conflict and crisis-affected groups, while maintaining neutrality and ensuring inclusiveness in our approach. Working through a network of country offices and local partners, NEF has operations in ten countries: Armenia, Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq, Mali, Morocco, Palestine, Sudan, South Sudan, and Syria. Our programs are organized around three themes: Inclusive Economic Development, Climate-resilient Development, and Stabilization and Peacebuilding.

 

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Agriculture Livelihoods Specialist will support the technical implementation of the project by ensuring that the activities are accomplished within the time frame.  S/he will follow up with, small vulnerable farmers, skilled workers and small entrepreneurs targeted by NEF’s intervention in the areas of 7 localities(Abujibeeha, Rasahd, Alabasiya, Taloodi, Ghadeer, Alleri and Kadugli) in South Kordofan State, to ensure smooth and quality implementation and proper documentation of the project.  Within the context of a longer-term strategy, the Agriculture &Livelihoods Specialist will participate in the elaboration of a sustainability plan that includes capacity building and guidance to support improve the food security & livelihoods of vulnerable groups. Especially women to build resilience.



 
 Duties and responsibilities:

RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the supervision of the Project Manager and in coordination with team members, the Agriculture &Livelihoods specialist has the following specific responsibilities:

Implementation and Monitoring:

  • Follow up on the day-to-day activities and work progress;
  • Actively participate in the collection and analysis of information used to determine vulnerability;
  • Provide technical direction and programmatic oversight of agriculture and livelihood interventions.
  • Ensure technical and standard agricultural practices are applied.
  • Coordinate the establishment of extension services to farmers in coordination with line ministries, including Ministry of Production and Natural Resources at the locality and state levels.
  • Ensure technical and standard livelihood are maintained, to enhance economic advancement of vulnerable affected households.
  • Lead the implementation of agri-business and in-kind grants support interventions, including mobilization, capacity building and distribution of in-kind grants.
  • Supervise all technical aspects of the project within the context of agriculture and food security interventions, including agriculture inputs and seeds fair systems, farmer-to-farmer extension, on-farm trial plots, and micro-credits groups.
  • Deliver targeted capacity building support for relevant staff to ensure holistic and technical sound programming.
  • Supervise, coach and evaluate technical staff (including partner staff and seconded staff) on a regular basis.
  • Represent NEF and the project at technical forums related to agriculture and food security.
  • Ensure effective coordination and collaboration with relevant market actors.
  • Roll-out technical quality assurance/control systems across the project cycle
  • Make regular visits to project sites in the field to observe activities and meet participants.
  • Ensure that technical approach is monitored in an effective and timely manner.
  • Ensure that all reports related to the technical approach are completed and submitted in a timely fashion.
  • Document and share lessons learned.
  • Lead /participate in output and impact data collection, analysis and reporting of success.
  • Perform and ensure high level of community participation and engagement in all stages of implementation;
  • Participate in elaborating a sustainability plan for supported microbusinesses;
  • Support in the preparation for and delivery of business development trainings and distribution of in –kind grants to beneficiaries;

Reporting & Documentation:

  • Deliver high quality, accurate, well organized and timely reports;
  • File all relevant project documents in compliance with NEF requirements and protocols;
  • Collect case studies and success stories adhering to NEF guidelines.

Other Responsibilities:

  • Ensure compliance with applicable donor and NEF policies and regulations;
  • Attend trainings;
  • Any other pertinent duties relating to the nature of the job as requested by the supervisor.

 
 Minimum Qualification, Skills and Experience Required:

QUALIFICATIONS

The successful Agriculture & Livelihoods Specialist must be a self-directed, motivated individual with the following qualifications:

Basic Qualifications:

  • University degree in a relevant field of Agriculture.
  • At least 2 years of relevant experience with humanitarian and/or development organizations, including significant experience in the required field.
  • Strong ability to work independently, organize work, meet deadlines, maintain composure, prioritize work under pressure, coordinate multiple tasks and maintain attention to detail.
  •  Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills, creativity and flexibility.
  •  Experience working on livelihoods projects and/or SME-type interventions is a plus.
  •  Experience delivering training and curriculums.
  •  Fluency in Arabic and English, both written and verbal.
  •  Experience working in Central Darfur area.
  •  High-level of knowledge and practice with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook required. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  •  Strong facilitation skills for effective training, workshops, and meetings.
  • Effective team player, able to develop and maintain respectful and productive work relationships.
  • Flexible, creative, and problem-solving oriented.

Position Criteria:

  • Willingness and ability to frequently travel to field sites in Abujibeeha.
  • Ability to take initiative; highly self-motivated, with a strong capacity to work within a team.
  • Ability to work independently, with a sound work ethic and a high level of professionalism.
  • Capable of maintaining confidentiality and ensuring others do so as well.
  • Flexible, enthusiastic, and willing to learn from and support others.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and cope with competing demands under tight deadlines.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with people from different backgrounds.
  • Strong and clear commitment to humanitarian principles and standards.
