Job Description

Position:  Nutrition Assistant                                              

Report to: Head of Health Facility  

Department: Health

Duty Station: Tunaydbah, Gedaref

 

Purpose of the Role

The Nutrition Assistant will be part of a health team that provides PHC and Nutrition services in the Tunaydbah refugee camp and will be responsible for the implementation of Community Management of Acute Malnutrition (CMAM) and Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) counselling activities in the health facilities and among target communities.

 

Key responsibilities

  • Conduct anthropometric measurement to screen beneficiaries for nutrition
  • Ensure all children and PLW admitted to the CMAM program are clinically assessed by the medical assistant or medical doctor in the HFs
  • Ensure children and PLW are admitted and discharged to the CMAM program as per Sudan CMAM guideline
  • Distribute therapeutic and supplementary food to beneficiaries as per the CMAM guideline
  • Provide clear counselling to beneficiaries on how to take the provided ration and conduct appetite test as necessary
  • Maintain proper record of the beneficiary data on register books, patient’s cards and other records
  • Ensure adequate food for ration, essential medicines and all other supplies are available through timely request and proper commodity management
  • Stabilize and refer children that require in patient care to the nearest Stabilization center
  • Helping ensure a hygienic and organized work environment
  • Perform appropriate assessments of IYCF needs and malpractices and do analysis and come up with clear recommendations
  • Provide appropriate counselling for PLW, caretakers of OTP/SFP beneficiaries and mother groups on breastfeeding, complementary feeding and maternal and child nutrition
  • Build the capacity of community volunteers on the IYCF counselling techniques and ensure the appropriate techniques are applied all the time
  • Ensure formation of the mother support group at the community level and community IYCF counselling conducted for the group members regularly
  • Ensure setting up of breastfeeding corners at each OTP/SFP site established or supported at Health facilities.
  • Develop monthly and weekly plans towards the accomplishment of the work plan and monitor the plan accordingly.
  • Document case studies regularly and shares with the team member and for Nutrition Officer.
  • Produce weekly and monthly report on CMAM and IYCF activities and submit to Nutrition Officer on time

Other

  • Other duties as assigned by the supervisor to enable and develop IRC programs

 

 

Required qualification and experience

  • Diploma in Nutrition or qualification in Nursing or Medical Assistant or Midwife with experience in Nutrition programs
  • Trained on CMAM and IYCF counselling as per Sudan Ministry of health standards
  • At least 2 years of experience in implementation of CMAM and IYCF counselling programs in INGO/NGO setting
  • Ability and flexibility to understand and work within the cultural and political environment
  • Familiarity with the local context: language, culture, etc.
  • Fluency in Spoken and written English is an added advantage
  • Basic computer Literacy: Word and Excel will be an added advantage
