 Background:

The United Nations Development Fund for Women’s (UNIFEM) mandate provides for the support to catalytic and innovative activities that promote gender equality, women’s empowerment and human rights. Information on gender equality and women empowerment is still fragile and is largely contested, and therefore there is need for constant preparation of briefs and knowledge products to enlighten the general public including women and girls. Therefore, the UNIFEM Communications, partnerships and Media Specialist, implements the corporate communications strategy, as well as provides inputs to the design, management and implementation of the Country Office communications and publication strategies which are geared to influence the development agenda promote public and media outreach and mobilize political and financial support for UNIFEM. The Communications Specialist will lead and have oversight of the communications team of the in-country office and maintain a regular working relationship with the UNIFEM East and Horn of Africa Regional Communications, partnership and media specialist. The Communications, partnerships and media specialist will engage with in-Country programme and Operations teams, staff of other UN Agencies, UNIFEM HQs staff (Communications Office) and Government officials, international and local media, subject matter experts, multi-lateral and bi-lateral donors and civil society ensuring successful UNIFEM communication strategy implementation.


 
 Duties and responsibilities:

Summary of Key Functions:  Planning and design of internal and external strategies for communications, partnerships and media outreach  Effective management of the Communications, partnership and media for UNIFEM office in the Sudan.  Facilitation of knowledge building and sharing  Support to marketing and promoting image of UNIFEM locally and internationally  Prepares news briefs for UNFEM web site, intranet, CO web-based knowledge management system at all levels  Implementation of the publications strategy and plan Detailed Components of Key Functions:  Planning and design of internal and external strategies for communications and outreach  Reviewing and editing of UNIFEM reports, identifying lessons learnt and good practices to disseminate them widely  Implementation of the publications strategy and plan  Documentation of UNIFEM interventions for publications  Track proposals and reports submitted to donor partners  Prepare end of project reports in consultation with programme officer in charge  Facilitation of knowledge building and sharing  Effective management of the internal and external Communications with partners, and media 1. Ensures planning and design of internal and external strategies for communications and outreach focusing on achievement of the following results:  Preparation and conduct of communications needs assessments for projects, country programme and corporate change initiatives, etc  Drafting/editing of communications and outreach strategy based on the corporate communications strategy.  Analysis of requirements and synthesis of proposals on ways to integrate advocacy and communication strategies into all aspects of UNIFEM’s development programme during programme formulations. 2. Ensures implementation of the publications strategy and plan focusing on the achievement of the following results:  Implementation of the CO publications strategy and plan, based on the corporate publications policy.  Identification of storylines for publications and drafting of substantive articles contributing to debates on key gender equality and women empowerment issues.  Coordination and management of publication activities, such as content management, norms for publishing, design, review and editing of reports and articles etc.  Contact with printers and other suppliers to ensure production and publications dissemination. 3. Supports the programme implementation and development focusing on achievement of the following results: Launches and campaigns  Promotion and maintenance of public information campaigns on UNIFEM activities, UN Reform, results of MDGs, especially goal 3 in association with other.  Promotion and dissemination of corporate advocacy materials for launching flagship initiatives and publications such as the VAW reports, women and peace building, gender/women participation in governance reports.  Packaging and submission of programme initiatives for donor review in collaboration with programme staff and supervisor. Outreach  Maintenance of increased coverage and understanding of the UNIFEM’s work in the country or practice area through regular media contacts and provision of newsworthy information to national public and, where possible, donors.  Organization of roundtable discussions, press conferences, briefing sessions, interviews, launches, etc.  Forging of a “one UN” image through publicizing the significance of local UN reform efforts, joint programmes, and common services. Organization and implementation of joint UN information campaigns (16 days of campaigns on Violence Against Women, International Women’s day among others)  Ensured access for journalists to subject matter experts.  Drafting/production of regular newsletter to donors and Regional office.  Preparation of donor reports, civic education and community awareness where appropriate to support projects  Set up a communications /information database for UNIFEM Country office programmes  Review of IEC materials developed by UNIFEM partners Public information  Effective responses to inquiries for public information materials. 4. Ensures facilitation of knowledge building and management focusing on achievement of the following results:  Identification and synthesis of best practices and lessons learned directly linked to programme country goals and activities.  Sound contributions to knowledge networks and communities of practice including corporate communications repositories.  Provision of training, consultancy and advice to UNIFEM staff on communications for development
