CAR ELECTRICIAN (Auto electrician)

 Background:

Electricians diagnose and repair electrical faults or replace components in motor vehicles, and fit new electrical and electronic parts and accessories. Most modern vehicles rely on a wide range of electrical and electronic systems, controlling most aspects of the vehicle's performance.



 
 Duties and responsibilities:

  • Taking readings, using a laptop or hand-held device connected to an engine's electronic control unit.
  • Checking and testing wiring and parts in older vehicles using portable instruments.
  • Using readings to find faults.
  • Researching faults, using manufacturers' circuit diagrams and manuals.
  • Repairing or replacing faulty parts.
  • Retesting the system to make sure everything is working correctly and safely (this may include road testing the vehicle).
  • Filling out a repair sheet listing the work you have done.

Liaise with agents and manufacturers on problems in order to achieve an efficient repair

  • Complete all documentation and receipts, including inspection sheets, and applies signatures as appropriate.
  • Identify repairs required via unfair wear and tear, and advice the service manager and foreman mechanic.
  • Undertake required training(s).
  • Work within a realistic time.

You’ll work with a variety of electronic systems including:

  • Ignitions, alarms, immobilisers and tracking devices.
  • Electric windows, mirrors and seats, towbar electrics and air-conditioning.
  • Customised LED or neon lighting kits, parking warning systems and reversing cameras.

You’ll also deal with in-car phones, TV, and audio and DVD players.
You could specialise in light vehicles (cars, vans and motorcycles), heavy vehicles (lorries, buses and coaches), or one particular vehicle model if you work for a motor manufacturer.


 
 Minimum Qualification, Skills and Experience Required:

  • Bachelor's degree , Engineering, Maintenance Technology, or equivalent field.
  • +5-7 years of hands-on experience in electrical fault identification and repair in Passenger Car and Commercial Vehicles with skills of handling major repairs / overhauling and diagnosis of faults for Passenger Car / Heavy Commercial Vehicles.

Practical skills:

  • Ability to work methodically and pay close attention to detail.
  • Problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to read electrical wiring diagram.
