On behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), GIZ is implementing the project “Food Security for Refugees and Adjacent Communities in Gedaref and Kassala states. The programme is implemented under the host agreement between the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and the Government of Sudan. The programme has three areas of intervention and aims at improving the livelihoods of the local population, refugees, and migrants:

  1. Improving Food Security and thereby increasing agricultural yields;
  2. Improving the nutrition security through the production of vegetables;
  3. Improving the supply of drinking water, sanitation and hygiene.

GIZ Sudan is looking for a qualified person to fill the following position: Food & Nutrition Security Officer for Gedaref Project Office.
The Food & Nutrition Security Officer (FNSO) is reporting to the Food & Nutrition Security Advisor (FNSA) of the GIZ Food Security Program for Refugees and Host Communities in Kassala and Gedaref.
The FNSO will be based in Gedaref or Kassala. The position will require regular travels within Sudan.

Responsibilities include:

  • Assist in designing, planning and monitoring of the projects food & nutrition security field implementation program according to strategy, proposals, budgets and plans.
  • Carry out field work according to the approved work plan, including data collection, field assessments, surveys, appraisals amongst other relevant data collection methods, as required by the work or monitoring plan.
  • Prepare field reports and data sheets.
  • Organize activities and results together with contracted organizations.
  • Assist short term consultancies and facilitate their work within the project area.
  • Assist in preparing contracts with appropriate NGOs based on agreed interventions.
  • Participate in regular work meetings and facilitate the exchange of information and experience between project personnel and subcontracted personnel.
  • Establish and maintain contacts with relevant stakeholders.
  • Participate in community level meetings, where the project is implementing interventions.
  • Assist in the dissemination of information and project results to selected stakeholders.
  • Report to the FNSA on all aspects of work and as laid down in the project reporting system.
  • Carry out additional activities as instructed by the FNSA and Project Manager.
  • Assist in the design and organize field missions, seminars, workshops to support the above work in the intervention area.
  • Assure reporting as laid down in the project reporting system.
  • Assist in the preparation of relevant documentation.

Required experience and qualifications:

  • Relevant higher education at college level in agriculture and particularly in food and nutrition and/or health.
  • Experience working in the agricultural sector with re to food and nutrition security.
  • Minimum 1 year work experience in a context within agriculture programs, preferably with an international NGO.
  • Computer skills (primarily MS Office applications).
  • Knowledge of the context in rural Sudan East Sudan.
  • Strong understanding of protection principles and likely protection concerns arising in the Sudanese context as well as conflict sensitivity.
  • Experience in complex emergencies and the ability to live and work in a very remote environment.
  • Ability to work under pressure and without daily supervision.
  • Good management and organizational skills.
  • Good communication skills.  
  • Confidential and trustful handling of data and information.
  • Highly service oriented.  
  • Fluent written and oral knowledge of Arabic and English, both written and verbal.
