NUNV Aviation Safety Officer

 Duties and responsibilities:

  • Works under the supervision of the Chief Aviation Safety Officer or the regional Aviation Safety Officer.
  • Assist in implementing the UN Aviation Safety Program including evaluating contractors performance
  • Perform aircraft inspections and compile aviation statistics.
  • Maintain the reference library and other pertinent aviation-related documents, ensuring they are current.
  • Promoting safety and safety awareness in the mission
  • Identifying aviation safety hazards and make relevant recommendations based on best practices and applicable regulations. 
  • Investigating occurrences and hazards when tasked in accordance with ICAO SARPs.
  • Carrying out safety inspections, assessments and surveys,
  • Monitoring the implementation of aviation safety related policies.
  • Preparing and distributing safety literature, newsletters and consolidated reports to appropriate areas
  • Providing safety briefings and training.
  • Strongly encouraged to set aside dedicated time for mentoring, skills and knowledge transfer through training and capacity-building when working with or supervising national or other rigging staff.
  • Perform other related duties as by the direct supervisor.

 
 Minimum Qualification, Skills and Experience Required:

  • Sudan National / Citizen of Sudan
    • A minimum of a first level university degree in Air Transportation, Aviation Engineering, Safety Management or Air Traffic Control, or graduation from equivalent military establishment or military flight/air traffic control training. Accident investigation qualifications are desirable.
    • At least 3 years of progressively responsible experience in air transportation or air traffic control operations, aviation safety or aviation engineering. Experience at the international level is an advantage. The incumbent shall be aviation safety qualified. Expert knowledge in the technical field of aviation safety and accident prevention and experience in use of ICAO documentation desirable.
  • Strong situational analysis and report writing skills in English. Ability to communicate and articulate words in a clear and concise manner. Demonstrated effective organizational and coordination skills, and the ability to handle work in an efficient and timely manner. Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team of international or national staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to use computer applications such as Microsoft Office suites – Word, Power-Point and Excel Spreadsheets. Knowledge of other UN supported software may be desirable but not mandatory.
  • Fluency in spoken and written English and Arabic.
  • Have a valid driver’s license and proven ability to drive manual gear 4x4 vehicles or mini-buses;
  • Have affinity with or interest in volunteerism as a mechanism for durable development and the UN System.
  • Related Certification from recognized Aviation Institutions such as FAA / IATA is desirable.

 

Other Skills:

 

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a multicultural and multinational team.
  • Demonstrated ability or aptitude to use computer applications such as Microsoft Office – Word, Power-Point and Excel Spreadsheets. Knowledge of other UN supported software may be desirable but not mandatory.

National UN volunteers do not receive a salary for their services. Instead they are provided with a volunteer living allowance (VLA) that is intended to cover basic living expenses. In Sudan, the VLA is equivalent to US$710 per month. This modest allowance enables the volunteer to live in basic, adequate and safe conditions thereby reflecting the volunteer spirit of the assignment.

 

The UNV contract will be issued initially to 30 June 2016 with possibility of 12-month extensions depending on mission requirement and performance of the volunteer. National UN volunteers are covered by health, life, and disability insurance. Other entitlements are provided per the National UN Volunteer Conditions of Service.
