Background: Purpose of Job:
To increase the impact of the British Council’s work in Education and Society and the Arts through managing the direct and indirect delivery of a portfolio of large scale and local projects, increasingly through partnerships, to meet the British Council’s objectives and targets and partner expectations in Sudan.
To manage a network of internal and external partners and service providers to meet all project targets ensuring that our work is delivered to high quality and with maximum effectiveness and efficiency.

British Council has operated in Sudan since 1947 with the aim of building cultural and educational relations between the Sudan and the UK. British Council Sudan is based in its Khartoum offices and offers a full range of British Council programmes including a Teaching Centre, Examinations, project management on behalf of other donors, and its own Grant-funded projects. From July 2011 it covers all of Northern Sudan with a separate Directorate formed for South Sudan.
This post covers Northern Sudan only. We aim to increase our impact by working more closely with partners and putting a new focus on sales and finance/business improvement.
The post is placed within the Programmes Team responsible for managing a portfolio of Large Scale Projects (LSPs) and Local Cultural Relations Projects (LCRs) in the areas of Education and Society and the Arts. The Programmes Team consists of two Projects Delivery Coordinators reporting to two Projects Delivery Managers. Both Projects Delivery Managers report to the Business Director who in turn reports to the Country Director to deliver agreed portfolio of projects. |

Duties and responsibilities: Accountabilities, Responsibilities and main Duties: (including people management and finance)
The post holder will Manage one Projects Delivery Coordinator and is accountable for high quality of delivery of Large Scale Projects (LSPs) and Local Cultural Relations Projects (LCRs) as agreed with the Business Director in line with the British Council’s Equal Opportunities & Diversity, Child Protection and other overarching corporate policies. To implement a portfolio of large scale and local projects through partnerships to meet all project targets:
Budget Management:
To manage project budgets and ensure that all financial transactions related to project activity are done to corporate standards:
Monitoring and Evaluation:
To ensure that monitoring process is embedded, project outcomes and impacts are measured and reported according to corporate standards, evaluations are conducted and lessons learned fed into ongoing project design and delivery:
Resources and People Management:
To effectively manage resources for project activity:
Risk Management:
To identify, assess, report and monitor progress in addressing risks to the achievement of project objectives.
Marketing and Communications:
To ensure that projects are marketed to the highest standards in print (press, publications), digitally (websites, social media, TV, radio) and at events (conferences, workshops, meetings).
Line management: of Projects Delivery Coordinator(s) in accordance with corporate performance management system and other administrative work as required.
Key Relationships: (include internal and external)
Internal: Country Director, Business Director, Programmes Team, Decision Support Team, Customer Services Team and Regional Project Managers.
External: Network of Partners and projects stakeholders, Funders of projects, local delivery partners, vendors / service providers.
Special requirements of the job: (e.g. travel, unsocial/evening hours, restrictions on employment etc)
Some unsocial hours, weekend work and travel (domestic and international) may be required occasionally.

Other important features or requirements of the job Business support services work requires occasional work outside conditioned hours, for example in the evenings or at weekends. TOIL should be agreed with the line manager in advance to maintain an adequate work-life balance. Postholder may be required to travel abroad or to other offices in the region and should therefore hold valid travel documents.
