 Background:

Arab States Regional Office - Sudan Country Office.  The Communication Analyst will be based in UNFPA main office in Khartoum and as required, will travel to respective UNFPA programme states.

 

Under the overall leadership of the Representative, the Communication Analyst reports to the Deputy Representative.   The Communication Analyst is responsible for the overall development, management and execution of the communication efforts of the CO.

 

Job Purpose:

 

The Communication Analyst will provide strategic guidance to a) implement the UNFPA Sudan Communication Strategy and update the Strategy as required, b) support the implementation of the ICPD Programme of Action with focus on International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD beyond 2014 and MDG beyond 2015, and c) promote the work of UNFPA Sudan among partners, international community, regional and local media, d) promote internal communication in accordance with Global Communication Strategy. 

 

The Communication Analyst will represent UNFPA in Sudan inter-agency communication and advocacy group and will contribute to the joint UN efforts in this area.  She/he is also a member of the of the regional (Arab States) communication focal points and on a regular basis, would collaborate with the Regional Communication Advisor (RCA) on all strategic information in the context of the UNFPA country programme.

 

Work Relations:

 

The Communication Analyst will work under the direct supervision of UNFPA Deputy Representative and in close working relationship with Assistant Representative, the Humanitarian Programme Coordinator and the entire Programme Team.

 

She/he will work with the national counterparts (both governmental and non-governmental), local media, the UN Sister Agencies, UN Resident Coordinator Support Office, UN Interagency Advocacy Group to establish functional partnership and enhance coordination mechanisms and to facilitate provision of UNFPA support and response in communicating issues related to UNFPA mandate and the roll out of the ICPD beyond 2014 in the context of the Country Programme Action Plan (CPAP) UNDAF and National Development Plans.

 

She/he will work closely with the Regional Communication Adviser in the UNFPA Arab States Regional Office and the colleagues in Media and Communication Branch under the Information and External Relations Division at UNFPA HQ office New York to ensure optimal communication flow and necessary coordination.



 
 Duties and responsibilities:

  1. Ensure the Country Office communication strategy is updated and implemented.
  2. Work closely with the UNFPA Country Office Programme Team and relevant partners to identify possible best practices and successful stories on UNFPA projects, policies and achievements in the country; share the stories with the UNFPA Arab States and the UNFPA Communication Branch at HQ New York as well as to national media and national and international partners in Sudan.
  3. Prepare media advisories, press releases, advocacy materials/package and fact sheets on UNFPA work and mandate area in Sudan both in English and Arabic and ensure their wide distribution to media networks and other relevant partners. 
  4. Draft and compile content for UNFPA CO website and ensure the website is updated on a regular basis, ensure that the design of the website is refreshed on a regular basis.
  5. Initiate the launch of the UNFPA Sudan newsletter, draft and compile its content, supervise the newsletters’ layout and ensure its dissemination to UNFPA partners.
  6. Develop a database, including a comprehensive mailing list of media, donors, national and international development partners, and ensure its update on a regular basis.
  7. Organize awareness raising sessions for media introducing the organization's principal focus areas, and the country programme work in Sudan.
  8. Organize visibility events involving media representatives including press conferences, report launches, media breakfasts and media visits to project sites in the field.
  9. Develop a photo database on UNFPA supported efforts in Sudan and ensure the use of these photos for public information and advocacy products.
  10. Lead the design and implementation of UNFPA advocacy campaigns.
  11. Prepare talking points and information brief as required for the Representative and Deputy Representative.
  12. Monitor media coverage on UNFPA’s work in the country, and share press clippings with UNFPA Arab States Regional Information Officer and Headquarters.
  13. Represent UNFPA in the Information and Advocacy Working Group as well as the UN interagency Communication Group.
  14. Ensure optimal communication flow and coordination between the Sudan Country Office, the Regional Communication Adviser, and colleagues in Media and Communication Branch at HQ office in NY as required. 
  15. Collect requested information and organize materials. This includes preparation of information and/or briefs, power-point presentations, summaries and background documentation for dissemination to the partners or media
  16. Work with the Programme Team to enhance partnership with media and initiate informal networks with the media in support of UNFPA areas of mandate.
  17. Perform any other duties as requested by the Representative.

 
 Minimum Qualification, Skills and Experience Required:

Education: Advanced degree (Masters level) in Communication and Global Development, Journalism, Social Sciences, Marketing, Public Relations or an equivalent University degree that is directly relevant to UNFPA’s mandate;

 

Experience: Minimum 3 Years of relevant experience preferably with some experience in an international organization.

  • Excellent knowledge of media and media relations.
  • She/he should be proven team player with excellent inter-personal communication skills;
  • Excellent written and oral communications and editing skills both in English and Arabic is a must;
  • A thorough understanding of the UN system in general, and most particularly of UNFPA mandate, its policies and operations and current development topics and political issues;
  • An ability to work well under deadline; keen understanding of the country’s culture, history and political context; familiarity with or knowledge of communication approaches in strategic planning, development, execution, and M&E; computer literacy is must.
  • Experience in webpage updating and in writing newsletters

 

Languages: Fluency in oral and written English and Arabic.

 

Computer skills: Proficiency in current office software applications
