UNDP in Southern Sudan is seeking qualified candidates for the following post:

  Background:

In accordance with the comprehensive peace agreement (CPA) and Security Council resolution SC 1590 of March 24, 2005, the United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) has been mandated to provide support and assistance to the Government of National Unity (GONU) and Government of South Sudan (GOSS) in planning, developing and implementing the national disarmament, demobilization and reintegration programme. To this end, an integrated UN DDR unit for the CPA has been established with HQs in Khartoum and field offices in North and South Sudan. In line with the Integrated DDR Standards DPKO is leading the planning and implementation of the D & D components, UNDP -through voluntary contributions- acts as the planning and implementation agency for the reintegration component.
UNDP is also implementing DDR under the ESPA and supporting the government to prepare for DDR in Darfur.


  Duties and responsibilities:

Under the guidance and supervision of the Admin associate , the Driver/Mechanic provides reliable and safe driving services ensuring that at a time of a brake down he/she can be able to maintain a vehicle high accuracy of work.

The Driver/Mechanic demonstrates a client-oriented approach, high sense of responsibility, courtesy, tact and the ability to work with people of different national and cultural backgrounds.

The Driver/Mechanic provides driving services to the operations and programme staff in the CO, Consultants and Experts and UN staff on mission.
Summary of Key Functions:

• Provision of reliable and secure driving services
• Proper use of vehicle
• Day-to-day maintenance, in case of break down of the assigned vehicle
• Availability of documents/ supplies

Specific duties and Responsibilities:

1. Ensures provision of reliable and secure driving services by:
a) Driving office vehicles for the transport of authorized personnel and delivery and collection of mail, documents and other items and
b) Meeting official personnel and visitors at the airport, visa and customs formalities arrangement when required.
2. Ensures cost-savings through proper use of vehicle through accurate maintenance of daily vehicle logs, provision of inputs to preparation of the vehicle maintenance plans and reports.
3. Ensures proper day-to-day maintenance of the assigned vehicle through timely minor repairs, arrangements for major repairs, timely changes of oil, check of tires, brakes, car washing, etc.
4. Ensures availability of all the required documents/supplies including vehicle insurance, vehicle logs, office directory, and map of the city/country, first aid kit, and necessary spare parts.
5. Ensures that all immediate actions required by rules and regulations are taken in case of involvement in accident.
6. Assists passengers in boarding and exiting vehicle.
7. Loads and unloads luggage, packages and other items.
8. Transmits and receives over two way radio system.
9. Monitors traffic and weather conditions and notifies dispatch of potential problems.
10. Keeps interior of vehicle neat and orderly.
11. Accurately completes driver trip sheet for each shift with information including driver number, vehicle number, number of passengers, pick up and drop off times, mileages, destinations, etc.
12. Learns and remembers locations of various destination points serviced by the fleet including lodging, entertainment and attraction sites.
13. Treats all guests, customers, and other persons in a courteous, friendly and professional manner. Also may be required to perform other related duties as requested.
14. Must also be available to work flexible hours.

Minimum Qualification, Skills and Experience Required:

Education:
Secondary Education (attach copies of Secondary School Certificates)
Valid General Sudanese Driver’s License.

Work experience:
• 3 years’ work experience as a driver/mechanic, safe driving record; knowledge of driving rules and regulations and mechanic skills in vehicle repair.
•Candidates with knowledge and experience in working with communities in states for which they are applying for are preferred

•Previous work experience in any parts of Southern Sudan is an asset
•Willingness and ability to travel to different States with in Southern Sudan

Language Requirement:
• Fluency in written and spoken English (ability to express simple ideas in English). Knowledge of at least one local language spoken in a State for which the candidate is applying for is desirable. Knowledge of Arabic language would be an asset.
